These St Patrick’s Day Oreo truffles are one of those recipes that work well when you want something themed but don’t want to spend hours on it.

There’s no baking involved, the ingredients are straightforward, and the process is simple enough to do ahead of time without stressing about it.

They hold up well in the fridge, travel easily, and look festive on a plate without needing much effort. If you’re making something for a party, a school event, or just to have on hand for the week, this is an easy one to reach for.

Why You’ll Love It

  • You only need a few ingredients, and the base is just Oreos + cream cheese.
  • They’re soft in the middle, snappy on the outside once the coating sets.
  • You can make them ahead, keep them chilled, and they’re ready whenever.
  • Mint Oreos make them taste extra festive without doing anything complicated.

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces brick cream cheese, softened – Full-fat is easiest to work with, and it holds the truffles together best.
  • 36 Oreos, finely crushed – Regular works, but Mint Oreos are perfect for St Patrick’s Day (same amount).
  • 12 ounces white candy melts – For dipping. White chocolate works, but candy melts set more reliably.
  • 12 ounces green candy melts – For drizzle (or full coating if you want green truffles).
  • Sprinkles – Optional, but they make them look finished.
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons neutral oil or shortening (optional) – Only if your melts are thick and you want a smoother dip.

How To Make It

Step 1: Prepare Your Baking Tray

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper first, because once your hands are covered in cookie crumbs, you won’t want to stop and do it later.

Step 2: Crush Your Oreos

Crush the Oreos into fine crumbs.

A food processor is fastest, but a zip-top bag and rolling pin works too.

Either way is fine, just aim for mostly fine crumbs so the cream cheese mixes in evenly.

Step 3: Mix Your Ingredients

In a large bowl, mix the softened cream cheese and Oreo crumbs until it turns into a thick, uniform dough.

It’ll look a little like dark truffle “clay.”

If it feels too sticky at first, keep mixing, it will firm up as the crumbs absorb the cream cheese.

Step 4: Roll Your Truffle Balls

Scoop and roll into balls, about 1 to 1½ tablespoons each.

Set them on the lined baking sheet.

If they’re not all identical, that’s normal, and once they’re dipped no one can tell!

Step 5: Chill The Truffle Balls

Chill the truffle balls until firm, about 20 to 30 minutes in the freezer, or about 1 to 2 hours in the fridge. (Freezer is quicker, fridge is gentler, both work.)

Step 6: Prepare Your Candy Melts

While they chill, melt the candy melts in two separate bowls.

Microwave in short bursts and stir in between until smooth.

Step 7: Dip Your Truffle Balls

Dip the chilled truffles into the white candy melts, let the excess drip off, then place them back on the parchment.

Once they’re all dipped, drizzle with the green melts, add sprinkles while the coating is still wet, and let them set in the fridge.

Keep refrigerated until serving.

Tips, FAQs, or Variations

Can I use Mint Oreos instead of regular?
Yes, and it’s the easiest way to make these feel “St Patrick’s Day” without adding anything extra. Same quantity, same method.

Do I have to freeze them before dipping?
You don’t have to, but it helps a lot. If the balls are soft, they can fall apart in the warm coating. Firm truffles dip cleanly and stay round.

What if my truffle mixture feels too soft or sticky?
Chill it for 10 minutes, then roll. If it’s still sticky, your cream cheese may have been extra soft, add a couple more crushed Oreos (a spoonful at a time) until it’s rollable.

Can I coat them fully in green instead of white?
Absolutely. Full green coating looks super festive. You can still drizzle white on top if you want contrast.

How long do they last?
They keep well in the fridge for about a week in a sealed container. You can also freeze them (usually 1 to 2 months), then thaw in the fridge overnight.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper so the truffles don’t stick later.
  2. Mix the crushed Oreos and softened cream cheese in a large bowl until it comes together into a thick, even mixture. It should look like soft cookie dough.
  3. Scoop about 1 to 1½ tablespoons of the mixture and roll into balls. Place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  4. Pop the tray into the freezer for about 20 to 30 minutes, just until the truffles feel firm.
  5. While they chill, melt the white and green candy melts in separate bowls, using short microwave bursts and stirring often. Add a little oil if needed to smooth them out.
  6. Dip each chilled truffle into the white candy coating, let the excess drip off, then place back on the parchment.
  7. Drizzle with green candy melts, add sprinkles while still wet, then refrigerate until set.

Note

These truffles can be made a day ahead and stored in the fridge until ready to serve.

Mint Oreos work great for a more festive St Patrick’s Day flavor, use the same amount.

Truffles can be frozen for up to 2 months, thaw overnight in the fridge before serving.
